Pedophile Dreams

I completely forgot to share any of the photos I took on my half-day off a few weeks ago.

I took the last half of a sunny Friday off of work and walked down to the new Olympic Sculpture Park, had an iced latte and hoofed it back so I could leave early and get a jump on sitting on my ass for the whole weekend.

I usually walk on the west side of Alaskan Way because that's the side of the street that the piers are on hence the side where the action is, baby. For some reason I decided to walk down the east side of the street. As I trudged, I kept seeing people with cameras perched along the tubular metal fence that runs along the street to bar entry onto the currently closed Waterfront Trolley track.

One fellow, noticing my EDC bag, took me for a photographer and asked if I knew when the train was coming. I thought he meant the trolley which, as I said, isn't currently running but he said, 'No! Not the damn trolley! The steam locomotive!"

Thanks to him, I set up shop a little ways down the line and got one decent photo of the old-timer as she roared by.

But the real reason I was walking down to the Sculpture Park is the fountain.

I didn't notice much about the fountain the first few times I saw it. It has two sprays that come up out of a round pool and they alternate. One morning on the way to work, though, I saw it when both sprays were off and it struck me as...odd.

There are two statues in the fountain. When the spray is up on one, you can barely make out that there's something being hidden by it.

One statue is of an anatomically correct nude man. He's holding his arms out toward the spray and statue opposite himself.

The other statue is of an anatomically young boy. He holds his arms out towards the spray and statue opposite himself.

I don't know the name of the fountain or who the artist is who designed it but it's a bit disconcerting in these times to see a depiction of this sort. I suppose it could be Age and Youth or some such. I just call it "Pedophile Dreams".

I do know that at least one woman is running for a Seattle City Council seat whose platform consists solely of destroying this fountain.

I don't even know what to say to that one. Seems to me like a waste of time to put a fountain up that you're only gonna obscure part of because of public unhappiness about it. Who decided the young boy should be covered in the fountain of water instead of the man and why is it worse to have a young boy nekked in public than an adult male? Ouch--thinking is painful! ;)
They're covered alternately, Pinkydoodles. When you can see the nekked man, you can't see the nekked boy and verse-vice-a. That was the design of it. People are unhappy because of the naked man-naked boy thing. Funny thing is, you have to wait around to see the change. When I got to the fountain, the nekked man was showing. I had time to walk around, take pictures and consume an iced latte down to the chewable ice before the nekked boy came out. So it seems that if you wanna get mad, you have to wait around...
Oh yeah, that last shot is the naked boy statue with the naked man covered by spray.

Silly me..I knew that from looking at the pictures but it didn't connect in my haid! DuhPinks LOL
LWHoll:
Dude, you have totally got to crazy glue a woody on the statue of the guy. After they take that off, dress him up like a clown or a priest. This is a golden moment for you, JD. Destiny calls.
Jenny:
Howzit, Panzo, it's Jenny from the lanai. The sculpture is called "Father and Son" and it's supposed to represent the sometimes tenuous bond between father and child. There's a plaque nearby that explains all this but it's hard to find. I can see that some might see a pedophile theme in this but I think it's a beautiful and touching sculpture and I hope it stays, because there was such a protest at the beginning from the usual factions who oppose --gasp! -- nudity in art. I imagine these are the same people who think the Fremont Solstice Parade promotes sexual degeneration. They would probably refuse to look at Michelangelo's statue of David for fear that his stone genitalia would blind them. I just don't get it: When I look at it, I just see a father and son trying to reach out to each other. To each his/her own, I guess. I'm enjoying your blog, by the way!
Ohhhhhhh! See, they're going to have to make that plaque more prominent. I was actually looking for one and missed it.

I always thought it was boy/man father/son or something like that (just because I know the Nervous Nellies at the SAM would never commission anything overtly controversial) but it sure is easy to make fun of.

Thanks for letting me know about that plaque!
